You don’t know anyone to recommend a good electrician so how do you find one. Fortunately professionals like electricians are subject to licenses and recognized levels of skill. The two most common are journeyman and master. They actually have a card certifying they have reached that level of expertise and are licensed by the state to perform electrical work.

There are plenty of people who know how to make simple connections like a fan or light fixture but are they a safe route to choose? Anyone who comes into your home to do work that can burn it down should have the insurance to pay for the damages.

When looking for a good electrician avoid small trade type publications where handymen advertise, instead try the Internet or phone book.

With today’s technology most handymen just operate with a cell phone. Licensed and insured electricians are more likely to have a permanent phone and some one to answer it.

There are honest and dependable handymen who can do some electrical work but you are taking a chance using them. There is a reason why they have not taken the time to become licensed or taken the required test to become certified in their trades. Sooner or later they leave the handyman business, then you are left with no one to finish the job or provide a warranty for the work they have performed.

Do not let anyone work on your electrical system that is not licensed and insured. A licensed electrician will be glad to have his insurance agent fax or email you proof of insurance.

A master electrician will figure the job and give you a bid or estimate. Unless it is a large job he will most likely send a journeyman and a helper to do the work. This is OK, they are working for him, he will inspect the work personally or send someone he can trust with his reputation.

Remember these guidelines. Electricians should have a license for the state. Then a license for the community or town. They should be certified as a master or journeyman. They should have liability and general insurance.

These qualifications will help you sort out the professionals and if you adhere to these guidelines you’ll get a good electrician.
